Mystery Google display case appears at Best Buy (Update: Nexus 10)

This finely crafted case would be a great place for a new phone or tablet to sit

This seemingly well-built Google branded display case was spotted by a reader in a Houston, Texas area Best Buy store. We received no other information, and really can't say what it might be for.

What we can say is now another has popped up on Google+, and those pedestals are commonly used for phones. We don't know if this is Nexus device related, but we're pretty sure it's something interesting.

Anyhoo, here it is for your discussion.

Update: Sometimes, it pays to bring a little attention to something. This is one of those times. Several anonymous sources have come forward to clear things up on these. There are two different styles you may be seeing in your Best Buy store. One (not pictured here) is larger and has a display area for Chromebooks. I've seen those here locally. These smaller ones are designed to hold the 2013 Nexus 7, the Chromecast, and the 2013 model ASUS Nexus 10 — which they say will be in Best Buy stores this month.

EE announces new tiered data speed plans, UK's most affordable 4G LTE

EE, the UK's largest 4G LTE provider, has today announced a range of new tiered data plans, along with the country's first pay as you go 4G LTE offering. The new plans are designed to offer the benefits of super-fast mobile data, yet become more affordable than ever before, and could be worth a look with a new iPhone 5s or iPhone 5c.

EE will start offering a range of 'entry-level' tariffs starting from £18.99 per month and offering download speeds of up to 30Mbps. Along side this, a "4GEE Extra" offering is being brought to the table, beginning at £26.99 a month, which claims to offer customers "access to the worlds fastest 4G speeds," the biggest UK data allowances for 4G, inclusive roaming calls and texts in 30 countries worldwide and fast track customer service.

Some bold claims aside ? especially since Three is yet to come on board with its promised unlimited LTE ? it's great news for UK smartphone owners that EE is beginning to drive the prices down for 4G LTE. The network is a year older than competitors, but competition is what we need to drive the prices to more affordable reaches. Windows 8 welcome screen revealed, looks very Metro

It's not really a secret the Microsoft had planned on bringing bits of Windows Phone 7's Metro UI to Windows 8, but we haven't seen a lot of really telling evidence. However, with the Windows 8 milestone 3 build now available to Microsoft Connect partners, it was really just a matter of time before we started to get a peek.

Thanks to Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott, we've now had a glimpse at what the Windows 8 welcome screen will look like. As you can see, the typography is very Metro indeed. Within Windows also mentions that the background image is customizable, and we're wondering if it might not pull from your current Windows 8 theme. This particular shot shows the CTRL + ALT + DELETE login option, but we imagine you'll still be able to log in by clicking your account picture tile as well.

Rivera and Thurrott also mention that the tablet version of the welcome screen will allow you to log in by swiping a pattern on the screen -- as you can on current Android devices.

Akamai: Half Of All Internet Connections Now At 4Mbps+, Safari Remains Most Used Mobile Browser

The ITU has recently published figures noting 2.7 billion internet connections globally, and today Akamai has released some numbers pointing to how fast those connections actually are. The company, a specialist in traffic optimization, says that we have now reached a tipping point of sorts: half of all connections made to its network are currently running at 4Mbps or higher -- a sign that "universal broadband" is finally starting to become not just an ideal, but a reality. The figures come from the latest instalment of Akamai's State of the Internet report, which crunches numbers based on some 1 billion connections made into Akamai's traffic optimizing network and also covers other subjects like security trends and mobile internet usage.
